While large and far-reaching could have the impact, only Google knows what it wants safe. We can speculate however and that is what this article is. As a business good for Sun (and Google) or is it a pact with the devil?
At first glance how much does not seem like a business. After all Java for most people is only a plug-in for your Internet browser. What would be good as a business to Google? Well can, take a look at, what Java can do. The following website is taken directly from Sun's:
The Java programming language is robust and versatile, so that developers:
Write software on one platform and run it on another.
Create you are running programs in a Web browser.
Develop server side applications for online forums, stores, polls, HTML forms, and more.
Writing applications for mobile phones, two-way pagers, and other consumer devices.
Let it break me for you - point by point:
Write software on one platform and run it on another
This means it me all - platform independent applications. What is one thing well does Windows? The programs run only on Windows. Typically port developer required to run applications on other operating systems such as Mac or Linux. But an application based on Java can run independently on each platform architecture.
Create programs to run within a Web-browser
This is an area that is missing the Google into something. Sure, that they own search and have some great Web based applications such as Gmail, but there are so many potential other Web based applications out there. Web based collaboration software, web based application suites (such as Office applications). The possibilities are endless.
Develop server-side applications
Again, because Java is platform independent, different types of server applications for Web sites can be created regardless of their operating system. An E-commerce system could that would easily integrated in a website, whether it be developed ASP or PHP-based. This would be a great competitive advantage for Google.
Write applications For...consumer devices
Portable web is the future. There is no doubt. Instead of building multiple platform dependent applications, you could again develop a Java based platform independent application. Because it is independent, you can run not only on your desktop or Web browser but also your cell phone, BlackBerry or PDA.
So, now that we can do Java what know, take a look at what can do Google with Java:
Competition on the desktop
Virtually every application could be ported from the current Windows-based version to a platform independent Java version. Current Google applications such as Picasa and Google Earth could now be available for non-Windows user.
A potential to compete with current Microsoft products is obvious. The first comes to mind is Microsoft Office. One would expect this is one of the first areas, the Google in is moved.
Although the potential is present. I think of how well that would be personal only for me. My computer runs Fedora (a version of RedHat Linux) for other reasons (games) my son's computer Windows XP is running.
If he needs help with homework can try it because it used Microsoft software and I use open source. If we could work together on something that which it runs OS on it would make our lives so much easier.
And this leads to my next point - cooperation.
In the competition with future Microsoft products
Microsoft has been getting better and better, but is still behind, which is online collaboration. Certainly they have Exchange Server and SharePoint, but these systems are somewhat cumbersome and not always play together nicely.
But imagine a system that is cross-platform (again), and multiple users from different areas use a common application base Web based and allows cooperation. The system could integrate for shared documents, calendars, email and other messages version control.
This system could be hosted by Google (of course), but will open that you want. In other words, you openly with clients or co workers, regardless of which system you use - you could establish a connection and read e-Mail work together with your PDA timetable could have dates with your laptop and even a Google talk VOIP call with your mobile phone. The possibilities are endless.
Take over the desktop
Google built to go one step further, what if a small light version of Linux that hosts links to Web versions of the Java applications are based. You had stored then this light, the Google Linux on a USB device.
So, no matter what computer you use, you could run it in the USB version of Google Desktop and all adjustments and settings as well as your home or the Office.
You borrow your laptop neighbours, or even go to the read mail Internet café and restart in "Glinux", react, dates and even a virtual conference via Google-IN the.
Again, depending upon, how aggressively will Google (and I bet, you are very aggressive) Google could be a real alternative to Microsoft. And not only Microsoft applications but Microsoft as a whole.
Google could take you from the desktop (or to eliminate it at least temporarily) as well as all MS based application.
Today, this is the true power of the transaction. While months or years to see the first "real" Google/Sun Java application take it, I expect to see, they take aim at Microsoft and what it has achieved.
Mission, to make accessible the worlds information as this is all in line with Google.
All what that is I, that I hope can say a great Bill Gates has enough war chest because he need it.
