Google gives Kansas City Gigabit Internet

The first U.S. city that will be the recipient of Google's 1Gbps fibre to the home.

The King of Internet speeds

They might not have a playoff contender, but Kansas City has something significant to hang their hat.  It will soon have the fastest Internet in the United States, if not the planet.

Google (GOOG) announced today that it had selected Kansas City as the first community of its rollout of 1Gbps fibre to the home.  Google announced earlier, it would roll out accession to Stanford faculty housing.  The original Fiber for communities, the announcement was made in February last year.

We plan to build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States. We will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabit per second, fiber to the home connections. We plan to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.

The service is waiting for approval from the city's Board of Commissioners and should see a rollout begins in 2012 – that is unless the Internet service providers have introduced a block.  Google's fiber only replace not cable/Telecom Internet service providers in Kansas City, but it will also force the U.S. customers across the country to ask why they do not have the same options.

It is a good question.  I had 100 Mb fiber in France three years ago for 50 €/month.  Today is my best option from Verizon (VZ) less than half of that rate of $ 145/month.

When you select a city, the aim will be to find a place where we could build effective, make an impact on the community and develop relationships with local authorities and organisations to which the community. We have found this in Kansas City. We will be working closely with local organisations including Foundation Kauffman, KCNext and University of Kansas Medical Center to develop gigabit applications for the future.

In addition to cable companies and telecommunications have another party to be quite appalled about the announcement.  Nearby Topeka Kansas name to Google, Kansas last year in an attempt to woo Google and its super fast broadband connections.
