Independent Search Engine & Directory Network (ISEDN) - Breaking News!

Watch out for a shift in the pay-per-click (PPC) industry, happening right now! This shift is finally going to give smaller search engines and directories the ability to tap into the PPC market, currently monopolized by the big guns online (Google, Yahoo & MSN). They will attain this lofty goal by banding together and delivering paid ad placements on a mass community scale for a fraction of the cost.

More and more advertisers are going to want to advertise through the ISEDN because of the sheer amount of exposure that they will be able to receive through all the search engines and directories partnered together through this network.

I was able to be the first to interview Mel Strocen, CEO of Jayde Online, Inc., the parent company of ExactSeek.com.

The Independent Search Engine & Directory Network (ISEDN) was an outgrowth of ExactSeek's commitment to bring affordable and effective search advertising to the web community. Although ExactSeek was successful in partnering with a number of search engines and directories, it became apparent that popularization of a new pay-for-inclusion program would be better served by an active and independent association of search engines and directories than by a single engine.

Here are some excerpts from that interview:

Martin: "When was the ISEDN formed? ( http://www.isedn.org )"

Mel: "The organization was officially founded in June of this year, although the idea for a network of this kind was being discussed for several months previous to that. The ISEDN website, however, is only a few days old."

Martin: "How many members does the ISEDN network have right now?"

Mel: "47 members at the moment, but the network has been acquiring new members at a rate of 3 - 5 per week."

Martin: "What kind of market reach can the network deliver?"

Mel: "It really depends on how big the network becomes. Some search engine and directory members have reported 10,000,000+ searches/month but, given the rapid growth of the ISEDN and the fact that it's only a few weeks old, we really haven't had the opportunity to determine the total number of search impressions the network can deliver. We expect to receive specific numbers from the members in the coming weeks which will enable us to provide a more accurate picture of the network's search reach. My best guesstimate right now is that pay-for-inclusion listings are displayed approximately 120 million times per month. Of course, that figure will grow as the ISEDN grows."

Martin: "Why should advertisers choose the ISEDN network over Google or Yahoo?"

Mel: "The most obvious reason is cost. An advertiser buying a 3 or 12 month listing is looking at a cost of $3 - $4 a month. I'm not aware of any other engine that can match what the ISEDN offers in terms of value or exposure. Where else can you buy targeted keyword terms for less than $5 a month and get top 10 exposure for your site listings across 45+ search engines and directories?"

Martin: "You're right, that is amazing!"

Martin: "Because of the sheer distribution size this could potentially have, what preventive measures are being implemented for click fraud?"

Mel: "In the ISEDN advertising model there is no incentive for click fraud to occur. You pay a one time fee for your selected keyword term and that's it. Competitors or bots could click on your ad repeatedly and it wouldn't cost you a penny more. With the monetary motive for click fraud removed, it's unlikely to be a problem."

Martin: "What does the future hold for the ISEDN?"

Mel: "It's a little early for me to speculate on how the ISEDN might evolve. ExactSeek is just one member. Future plans will depend on member participation and input in the coming months. What I would like to see is for the ISEDN to become a counter weight to the gradual monopolization of search on the Web by engines such as Google, Yahoo! and MSN. I would also like to see the ISEDN contribute in other areas related to search such as search relevance and possibly the support of open source search software. In the long term, I believe the Web and searchers in general will be better served by diversity than by monopoly."

Martin: "Are members going to decide the future of the network?

Mel: "The short answer is yes, they will. To function effectively, the ISEDN will in time need to implement some kind of governing structure that determines the organization's future course. What that structure is and how the ISEDN evolves will depend on input from the members. Initially, direction and objectives will most likely be determined by majority concensus.

We've just added a private member discussion forum to the ISEDN website which will allow members to voice their views on issues such as the network's direction, objectives, online advertising, governing structure, network promotion and other topics of relevance to the membership.

Martin: "So will any of the discussions from the network forum be opened up to the public?"

Mel: "Eventually, yes. Assuming public interest, we'll setup discussion forums that allow webmasters and/or siteowners to ask questions and provide feedback to individual ISEDN members or to the membership as a whole. If we go this route and, I expect we will, it should help to improve communication between searchers and search providers. It should also help raise general public awareness of the many excellent directories and search engines on the Web that currently are under the radar."

Martin: "So how does the advertising portion work?"

Mel: "Every ISEDN member is provided with an XML feed to implement within their search results or directory listings. The feed can be modified by the individual members so that pay-for-inclusion listings are displayed in a way that matches their site look and feel, but regardless of how the listings are displayed, advertisers are guaranteed top 10 exposure across the entire ISEDN network. Premium placement of this kind is made possible by the fact that we limit the number of times any one keyword term can be purchased and because all paid listings are rotated in the SERPs (search engine result pages) on each individual engine and directory.

Surveys have consistently shown that few searchers look at more than 30 search results for any given search query. The ISEDN advertising model takes this into account and limits the sale of any keyword term to 30. If a keyword term has been sold less than 10 times, the paid listing almost always appears on the first page of search results (depends on how many listings an ISEDN member displays per page) although not always in the same position. If a keyword term has been sold more than 10 times then paid listings begin to rotate between the SERPs. On sold out keyword terms, the worst case scenario for an advertiser would be that his listing would appear on the first page of results roughly once of every 3 searches on his keyword term. This is somewhat offset, however, by the fact that the system supports broad keyword matching as well as exact keyword matching.

Martin: "With this first come, first serve program - Are you worried that bigger companies will buy out all the keywords available?"

Mel: "Not really. There are literally millions of keyword term combinations available. As the more obvious terms are bought out, it might require more creative thinking on the part of advertisers to come up with good searchable terms, but other than that, I don't anticipate a problem. Based on current trends, many buyers either forget to renew their keywords or simply let their listings expire. The end result is that thousands of keyword terms will be rolling over on a continual basis. In the event that the program becomes so wildly popular that keyword availability does become a problem, we may have to look at changing the parameters of the system to accomodate demand, but that's unlikely in the forseeable future."

THIS IS AN ADVERTISER'S DREAM!

Anytime a PPC or paid inclusion ad can get distributed through an entire network of competitors, it has the potential to be very powerful and deliver a lot of quality results. Personally, I would much prefer to advertise within 100 websites rather than just one. The power of advertising is in the numbers!

This couldn't have come at a better time. The SEO industry is crying for quality PPC alternatives. Google's recent battle with click fraud has left many advertisers world wide wondering if they should really keep their entire internet advertising budget within one basket.

Increase Your ROI Through Smaller Programs Online:

More and more, Smartads is recommending paid advertising in smaller, more tightly knit search engines and directories to our clients. ROI (Return on investment) is very important to the adverising industry, and we have found that advertising in smaller ventures rather than the bigger gorillas online, brings better results.

The reason for this is simple:

* - Less competition
* - Greater targeted audience
* - More local opportunities
* - More exposure for your money

In the old days, creating smaller, more targeted PPC campaigns used to be a lot of work for the marketing professional to research and maintain. The ISEDN has made that job a lot easier for us to maintain on a larger scale. Why would spend hours trying to find smaller directories and other programs, when you can find them under one umbrella?

Twitter - News at the Speed of Light

News is driven by speed. The media outlet that breaks the story first leads their competitors, and consumers reward those media outlets that get the timeliest news to them first.

It's true.  When you see the scrolling banner at the bottom of the TV that says "Breaking News", what do you do?  You stop and watch and listen.  When listening to the radio and you hear the announcer interrupt the song with a "news flash" - you immediately pay attention.  The most recent news is the most relevant, and media outlets have worked for decades to be the "first" to get the news to you before their competition.

Guess what?  Web 2.0 and the Internet have turned this news model upside down.  Now, instead of the news teams racing to the scene of an airliner accident to be the first with live video, and the first to interview the eyewitnesses, the first to break the news is no longer the media outlet.  The first person to break the news is the eyewitness, or even the person who was in the accident.  How? With Twitter. Twitter now breaks news at the speed of light.  Did you know that when the Continental airliner crashed into the Hudson River this year, that one of the passengers that survived the crash landing Twittered his friends, and even sent photos?  Instead of the news media outlet interviewing the survivor and breaking the news - the survivor was breaking the news himself via Twitter, with a real time update that he sent to his followers that they could then forward on.

The Internet and social media have transitioned power to the actual newsmakers, and away from the media outlets.  Does this mean that modern day media outlets will soon become outdated?  No - but it does mean that the speed of breaking news has just accelerated rapidly to almost near time information.  Twitter not only allows an individual to share news rapidly, it also is a simple way to share that information rapidly amongst a large amount of followers.   Now, rather than relying on a reporter in the field racing to the scene, the news media outlet has an army of millions of "news reporters" who can share breaking news with them instantly via Twitter as it happens.

Twitter also provides the immediate relevancy of news that the search engines have been looking for. When you search up the terms for "Hudson river airliner crash" on your favorite search engine after hearing about the accident, you don't want to find search results that share articles that are several years old.  The older search algorithms would often do this, as the "old news" had been indexed in the search engines and was deemed most relevant to your search.  The search engines have recognized the lightning speed of news via Twitter, and are already rewarding Twitter posts with immediate relevancy on the search engines.

News at the speed of light, online, and with your traditional media outlets.   Twitter has provided another breakthrough in providing breaking news as fast as possible.

The Growth in People Powered 24 News and Breaking News Internet Websites

There have been similar websites / concepts but these were based on earlier technologies, typically the mobile phone using MMS, they could never provide the comprehensive service now offered by the newer technology Internet news sites.

Mobile Phone Technology

Whilst mobile phones were successful for sending news and pictures, for example the Tsunami in Thailand, the mobile phone network often cannot cope with the volume of traffic during such an event. Networks were overwhelmed with people trying to phone friends or relatives to see if they were safe.

Within a very time of the London Bombings, mobile phone networks were unable to cope and the situation was made worse by people continually pressing re-dial.

Phone networks expect a certain volume of traffic based on the number of people who have subscribed to that network; the internet works on a different principle and so does not cease to function efficiently during a time of increased communication.

Breaking News

The speed at which breaking news hits the internet cannot be bettered as it only takes few a minutes for a user / reporter to send news in 3 easy steps:-

1. Click to write & report news

2. Add videos, photos & tags

3. Login or register to submit

Coverage of a UK based Internet News Website is typically:-

London and the Southwest N Ireland North North East North West Scotland Wales South West Midlands European and World Coverage.

There may also be other tabs for Travel news, entertainment, sport, business, politics, technology. New websites using Content Management Systems like Drupal (used by the White House) can easily cope with vast amounts of information.

News from any country in the world can be put on the website as easily and quickly as regional news, and the user can read the news they are interested in at the click of a button.

This contrasts to 24 hour news on the Television, where the viewer has to see news that may not be relevant to them while they wait for the news item that they are interested in. If they tune in to the same 24 hour news channel 30 minutes later, they may notice that some of the news is on a sort of loop, and they have to watch the same story again, even though they were disinterested in it the first time around.

24 hours news, the Ipad and mobile Internet Devices

The internet is now the best medium for breaking 24 hour news because of the increasingly widespread use of mobile internet devices. Examples are the Ipad, tablet pc's, notebooks and the latest generation of mobile phone with fast and efficient internet access.

Today's young professional increasingly use internet news sites at home and work. They can quickly zoom in on items of news, business or travel and then move on to the next item in their busy schedule.

Conclusion

When large numbers of consumers bought and used mobile phones either in addition to their fixed lines or as an alternative to having a fixed phone line, it affected the way we communicate. It is expected that as large numbers of consumers buy and use mobile internet devices in addition to, or as an alternative to their 'fixed line' (broadband or network at work / University), there will be increased use of highly successful people powered 24 hour breaking news internet sites.

Publicity Predicament #9 - How Can I Take Advantage of Breaking News?

If a news story breaks that relates to the services or products you sell, become alert, find an interesting way to make the connection, and take action as soon as possible. This is one of the fastest and cheapest ways to earn media coverage that captures attention in the marketplace.

The news you use as a hook might be front-page stuff or much more obscure. It could be national, international or local.

Let's say you're a plumber and you learn that the price of copper, which has been sky-high for the last year, suddenly dropped. The connection is that homeowners will soon have an opportunity to undertake kitchen or bath renovations for less because the price of copper pipes will be lower.

Or an earthquake occurs halfway around the world, killing thousands, in a city thought to have a low risk of quakes. You own an insurance company. You now have an opening to offer advice on whether or not those living in your locale should have earthquake coverage.

Or a celebrity's young daughter gets kidnapped, ransomed and returned home unharmed. Your firm manufactures bracelets that also secretly function as location devices. Had the daughter been wearing one of your bracelets, the police would have been able to find her within an hour.

Got the idea?

In the first two of these situations, the business seeking publicity serves local customers only, so they should direct their publicity tie-in efforts to local newspapers, TV and radio. In the third situation, the company should aim at national publicity first, since their customers live anywhere.

The simplest way to jump into action with your breaking news connection is to call a media outlet you have reason to believe would consider your story relevant and track down the reporter or editor who handles the subject matter. This is much easier than it sounds. You see, tips are the lifeblood of news organizations, so that unlike companies that shield employees from the public, they have to have a system of channeling story suggestions to the proper person.

All you have to do is call the main telephone number of the media outlet, ask for the "news desk" and then ask who you should contact about a real estate (for our first example), business (for the second) or child safety (for the third) story. When you reach the person covering your topic, explain your news connection in four sentences or less. If you're leaving a voice mail message, end with your call-back number. If you're talking to someone live, finish your pitch, shut up and wait for their response.

You can make this sort of pitch by email also, if you have a reliable email address for a reporter, tip line or topical editor. Keep it brief and to the point and include a phone number as well as your email address for a reply.

When you're trying to interest national media in your story, pitching media outlets one by one takes too much time. If you have a particular media outlet you think would be a likely match for your publicity angle, contact them as described above. For example, the child safety bracelet story would be perfect for morning TV news shows like "Today" or "CBS This Morning." Otherwise, writing and distributing a press release is the way to go.

A press release presents your news tie-in in a specific journalistic-style format. (Google "sample press release" to find models to follow.) Normally these are 400 words or less - a page or so - in length. Use a press release distribution service such as PR Newswire, PRWeb or Emailwire to get your release in front or media people and the public.

Above all, do not delay. What's hot and exciting today may evoke no interest at all tomorrow or next week. Inform yourself now about all the steps described here so that when news breaks that can launch you into the public eye, you're prepared to jump right into action.

Google has white lists & exception lists

Google Whitelists/Exception ListsIn January, we have if Google has a white list for their search engine. Then a few weeks ago Google said no, they have white lists - in General. Yes, a vague answer.

In the spam police Panel at the SMX West, I put a question for Google's Matt Cutts forward, has asked him right, Google white lists.

Matt went a long way to answer, but basically said, Yes, Google has white lists for they call "Exception lists." But it is important to note that the exception lists on a per algorithm basis. Meaning, that is where a website is never get hurt in the Google results not only certain global white list - some call it the Wikipedia "Whitelist". Google said that most of the algorithms do not even have white lists, but have some and because not all search algorithms are a perfect 100%.

Danny and I wrote in detail about this at search engine land and then Google provided a statement:

Our goal is to provide people with the most important answers, as soon as possible and we do that in the first place with computer algorithms. In our experience, algorithms generate much better results than the man ranking websites of page. And given that it would be possible to hundreds of millions of queries that we receive every day, already manually work around them. In other words, we sometimes involve manual problems such as malware and take copyright violation to do. Like other search engines (including Microsoft Bing), we use also exception list if certain algorithms inadvertently impact Web sites, and if we believe that a whitelist quality considerably will improve search. We will protect any master list certain websites of all changes to our algorithms.

The most common manual exceptions we make are for sites that are adult content from their results filtering tool, who caught a way people, of SafeSearch-a. For example, "essex.edu" was marked wrong by our SafeSearch algorithms because it contains the word "Sex". On the rare occasions we make manual exceptions, we go our quality standards and guidelines to all sites to the great lengths fairly applied.

Of course, we would much rather not for manual changes to make and manage not for each exemption lists. But is the search still in its infancy, and not all questions our algorithms.

Yes, you said Microsoft, they also exception lists to use. But these lists are always revised and cleaned. D. h. If they push an update to an algorithm, try, make sure that the sites in the list of exceptions from the list, so perfect this algorithm can be removed.

For me, this is a big deal for the SEO space and I am not sure getting why it no longer play yet.

I might publish a video recording of the session in the Google and Bing, that allowed this exception list, so check back later today.

You may have noticed, that the corresponding card module no longer place pages appears on Google. The team took a close look and measured, what types of information users found useful and relevant, and outlined ways to make the page for people looking for information about places more relevant.

Google says that do not display play important role in the ranking algorithm

Google Ads Quality ScoreThere was much discussion around the Google farmer update, that display a role play.

Meaning, if you show too many who can look at Google, as a sign of the low quality of the content and insert your ranking for the site as a whole.

Vanessa Fox mentioned that article says it as well in their lessons learned:

Matt said that have advertising on your website by nature of its quality is not reduced. However, it is possible to overdo it. I had noted in my previous article about this change, that in particular no content and only display of the fold, as well as pages that display as many have, it is difficult, a poor user experience is often to find non-advertising content.

That being said, Google's JohnMu said only it in Google Webmaster help thread says:

Another factor, the destruction is mentioned - map. Do not display normally important play for our algorithms. However, they can a role with your visitors.

Forget the user page, said John in Google algorithms map "not playing a major role." They play a small role? Is it about the content of the ad ratio? Or it is implied that websites with many display usually lower quality content have? There are so many ways to read it. Probably the best way to read it, like Vanessa above is said.

Tedster said in a WebmasterWorld thread:

The idea that Google spends resource recording things like word count- or even more, language level - interested in me. I guess, that this is used only for now, but as in the ranking algorithm research could be. But it not these factors with Google's "Intention engine" stretch the imagination too far to foresee, suitable data.

As a rough example, a transactional intent could push pages with very long copy - but might lean to informative or scientific intent towards more and read more level content.

SEOs talk about the impact of Japan's earthquake had on traffic

A few WebmasterWorld's threads sum up, when we talk about how you even would bring to the impact on the traffic when so many lives are lost.

Frank said:

Sorry for starting a sad thread that might look like, how disrespectful what happened in Japan. However, I am here on the effects of such Schreckensnachricht in Google and other search engine traffic to speak.

Someone is experiencing traffic drop because of the such messages?

Truth is, it seems that many sites have seen a major decline in the traffic around the time of earthquake & tsunami in Japan.

For me, is it a bit disturbing, to see a thread as follows. Some consider would their traffic and what whatever the decline and money loss, think, it has as much worse someone in Japan, which was affected by the event. I know many do and they should still "business return to", but it is sad for me to read these threads.

I want my respect to our readers who have been injured directly from this terrible natural disaster. I would like to you, your families and friends, the best and support.

As I said earlier, there are still two threads at WebmasterWorld on the traffic drop around the time of the quake Japanse.

8 Percent decline in traffic, but that's not unusual that during times like these, people see.

The complaints have a WebmasterWorld and Microsoft advertising thread.

In short, it seems like the "" maintenance work surprised many advertisers and if the maintenance window completed the reporting and tools was, did not update as fast as advertisers would have wished.

A provider said:

If it 'was planned' Cancel not then why on earth she some its clients about this? I might need to make some significant changes, and I am completely – very very bad ADCENTER!

An other advertisers said:

AdCenter is back up but... I reports 9 hours behind as white, what I spent have so far today (way too much already reported for the period), can not change the standard offers ("AdCenter an error has occurred" message...) and the map for my keywords, I am the top dollar offer to took a nose dive way down the page, and I'm not my commandments to get same position, just double my business suffered too many loses as a result of the delay in reporting is. What else will go wrong, that we have discovered not?

I think Microsoft life and learn from that. I'm not sure whether Microsoft advance maintenance or not sent. I know that this customer complaints are not answered at the moment.

Use fix 404, NoIndex & 301 redirects in farmer/Panda

Google Farmer/Panda FixThe farmer/Panda Google update hit and 40% said that they are affected by the update.

We documented advice how to fix the problem if you one of the pages of this update were affected. But in particular, what do you do with low quality content?

Do 404 pages so that they are gone forever? Use these pages to higher quality content pages 301 redirect? Do the pages to noindex? The answer is that it depends on.

Google's JohnMu made it quite clear, in a Google Webmaster help, if you a 404 vs should use a noindex vs. a 301 redirect. In short, 404 planning pages, that you do not have the setting. You can create the pages noindex, are the current low quality and if you improve the quality of the content on these pages, you can remove the NOINDEX. If you have any of the sites you use the low-quality pages redirect and then a 301 redirect.

Here is how John put it:

Remove all pages that you do not want to be sure more. Let return 404 (and make a great 404 page, so that your users get, where they were headed, or relatives can find something). See http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=93641 Yes, these pages show find up as crawl errors in webmaster tools, but that's OK - it should. You are not the rest of your site crawling, indexing or ranking affect. Return the 404 pages is fine and can be expected. HTTP result code can be a little faster, with a 410 ("gone"), but as a whole, you must have the difference, 404 is ok.You have products that you can merge, you then use a 301 redirect from the alternative versions. If you can use a 301 redirect, you use the rel = canonical link Element.Wenn you have entries that you want to write, then use a noindex meta tag sounds like a good solution. I would keep (the URLs in the sitemap file you want to Google content index, to them, so that the noindex meta tag is seen) and make sure that they are not allowed by the robots.txt file. As Cristina said, which means that more resources, treat your website must crawl these pages, but I suppose, because we have them in the past burden is not a problem, or?

Once this is done, said John it may take some time for the changes to take in Google. John said:

Keep in mind that any changes that you make in this context when, will influence the algorithms. We have to crawl and index your content updated (or removed), and can take a little time. The better your site URL structure is (minimum duplicate content & easy to crawl), the faster we will be able to update things, but I would expect certainly night changes. It took a while for your website to get where it is now on, and it will take a while for these updates to be displayed. On the other hand, time, that is also really refresh your content & site structure too:-).

There are some really solid advice in the thread.

Google rated stars sunset as block results acquisition

Google StarThis feels like a cat and mouse game. Google has blocked results, Google drops blocked results, Google adds drop with results with results, Google. Google is known, that new user interfaces and swap it out for new and even old tests after finding that they are test unhappy with searchers with these changes interact.

Thinking you because, if Google SearchWiki replace stars rated added? Now, as you know Google just that brought websites feature 2005 block, and so she felt the "stars" feature now remove the can, have them at some point recently.

Here is a screenshot result played show results in Google, but also new results directly in Google as I not can star.

Google Stars

The only way, "Star" results is to use Google Bookmarks.

I should note the star shows for your Google Bookmarks, but you can no longer "Star" or "Bookmarks" results directly from the search Google search results pages.

By Google Laudy this commented in two Google Web search help of thread after complaints, that the stars function was missing. Laudy said:

This feature is no longer available on Google. Rated stars she worked as a bookmark function still exists in google.com/bookmarks. Here you can see all selected objects, and one of your old marked features is to be.

Here's some more detail on bookmarks.

Thank you for the demand

Are you annoyed that Google rated by Google.com fallen stars?

Forum discussion at Google Web search help.

PostScript: A Google spokesperson sent us a statement:

Results that you played already or have bookmarks appear continue to star in your search results. You can also bookmark pages by using the Google toolbar or visit google.com/bookmarks. We are however in the process of updating our bookmarking functions so the possibility of new locations on the results page is currently not available.

Google on content delivery networks & classifications

Google Cloud SEOA Google Webmaster help thread has affected a Web master, which rejected since the changeover to a content delivery network (CDN) its PageRank and search rankings.

A CDN is a way to host your website or parts of your site on servers that are more scalable server resources and bandwidth. Many large websites use CDNs host graphics, videos, and scale their database resources if necessary. Are apart, they are bad for search engines?

The answer is, it depends on how you have configured it. Google index files on clouds, and if you host files on the cloud correctly, as described here you should be fine.

That being said, JohnMu of Google to the webmaster make replied:

I'm not sure, how you use a CDN, it's hard to say, sure. My guess is that you only normal fluctuations with toolbar see PageRank that can happen for a variety of technical reasons (and they usually directly back quickly to). On the other hand, if you, significant changes in the ranking see a change would be not used as follows.

Moving images on a new host (provided the URL changes it to a CDN) probably you are fluctuations in the image search until it compromise back down (it takes only a little for the new indexed URLs instead of the old). How we generally JavaScript files would indicate not, you have it to a different host generally unaffected.

In any case, while it can lead to a CDN small temporary fluctuations, making your site help faster often your site much more. Some studies have shown that the higher your Web site, which remain more visitors, and this is generally a good thing:-). Mentioned as I above, if you will see significant changes in the ranking, I would look elsewhere for the problems.

CDNs are overall good, as long as they are configured correctly. You can actually lead to a faster site, which we all know, Google examined.

Breaking News - Use it to Boost Your Public Relations

It's easy to think that public relations is just about making the most of the news you have or 'creating' news stories that will appeal to the press and media. If you can respond quickly and provide helpful comment then breaking news is a great opportunity to boost your own public relations activity and profile. Here are some handy tips to get you thinking about making the most of breaking news.

Monitor the news - it's essential to keep track of the press and media for the stories that are being covered. It's unlikely that a week will go by without some sort of story appearing that you could contribute to. That means being on top of the news and stories as they appear and develop during the day. It's not difficult to see the stories that are likely to get coverage over a couple of days.

Act quickly - the important thing is to spot a story and then act on it. The quicker you are in contacting the relevant journalist with useful comment or material then the more likely it will be that your efforts will pay off. The world of press and media moves quickly so you need to do the same. You'll also need to consider the deadlines that journalists are working to. The 24 hour news channels mean that there is now much more scope for providing expert comment on the back of a news story. They have air time to fill and will be grateful if you can help them do that. Also, don't forget that many of the stories that appear in the Sunday newspapers are the week's stories in more detail and with additional comment - that gives you a great opportunity.

Help to push on the story - ensure that what you contribute provides useful information, can look at the story form a different perspective, help to move the story on etc. The audience wants to be informed and your job is to help achieve that. It's no good approaching a journalist about a business story saying that you are a business coach - you need to be very specific, in relation to the story, about what you can contribute.

Make yourself available - if you want to raise your profile on the back of someone else's news then you need to put time aside to do that. It can be disruptive because it's not planned. Before approaching any journalist be clear that you can contribute time to follow through. If you are successful in your efforts then that may include travelling to a studio, doing interviews etc and that all takes time and effort. In advance of an interview you may also want to seek the services of a media trainer to help you prepare. This is a good idea particularly if you haven't done much press and media work.

Build relationships - approaching journalists on the back of breaking news also provides you with a great opportunity to build relationships with journalists covering your interest area. Find out the type of stories they are interested and whether you can help them on other stories. Also, if you do a good job then it gives you scope for getting them to put you in their 'little black book' of contacts for future stories - that's what you really need to achieve.

Become an expert - there are two ways to generate opportunities for comment and interview on the back of news stories. One way is to contact journalists direct. The other is for them to contact you. In an ideal world you should probably do both. There is a site worth looking at: http://www.expertsources.co.uk where you can list your details for a paid-for subscription. Journalists use it to find experts to provide comment for the stories they are working on.

Commenting on the back of other people's news is a great way to build your profile and get exposure to key audiences. It is also an important way to build you profile while keeping your costs down. If you can build a reputation for providing useful and insightful comment then you will quickly find that journalists will come back to you time and again.

Using PR to build your profile and protect your reputation can help you influence the audiences that are important to you - I invite you to access more free articles, tips and information on this, and other subjects related to public relations, by visiting: [http://www.smallbusinesspr.net]

How to Break News...and When to Apply the Brakes

" Whitson, Journal News."

"Jamie, it's Phil, how you..."

"Phil, whataya got? On deadline. Can't talk."

"I'm following up a press release I sent late yest..."

"Yeah, got it. Not news. Call me when you have news."

Ah, the life of a public relations neophyte, navigating the mine-filled corridors of our nation's newsrooms...armed with more nerve than news sense. One of the first rules of thumb is knowing when information becomes news. And knowing that what's news to one editor or publication is not news to another.

Sustaining a steady drumbeat of company communications is an important--indeed indispensable--part of raising broad awareness. But if your goal is to spark editorial interest that leads to a story, you need to be selective in discerning what is truly newsworthy. You are not only competing for an editor's attention; your success going forward depends on your public relations representative's credibility as a reliable news source.

On any given day, editors are bombarded with hundreds of press releases and story queries (i.e., pitches) that vie for their attention. Ultimately, your press release or query will either be lost in the daily avalanche of e-mails or land a coveted spot on a publication's editorial calendar as the focus of a feature story, the subject of a product review, or with a company representative slated as an expert source to be interviewed.

But how exactly do you get editors to sit up and take notice of your message? You need to put the "news" in news release by providing editors with timely and targeted information that they can rely on to fulfill their obligation to their readership to deliver relevant and practical articles that help them succeed.

But, on the other hand, not all press releases are newsworthy--consider the release that announces the appointment of a key individual in a company. In all likelihood, the announcement will be relegated to the back pages of a publication with other similar items.

So why bother sending it out? Because you have to keep your eye on the big picture. Press releases serve as a way to boost company recognition among your target audience--editors. You need to build and maintain awareness of your company and its products and/or services. In other words, make sure that the media knows that you're a "player." Consistent communications is the building block of every public relations campaign. As we illustrated earlier, you need to apply the brakes and resist the urge to call the editor to see if he or she received your "announcement."

When it comes to following up on a newsworthy release, reciting the contents of the release to an editor over the phone or asking whether it has been received is likely to lead nowhere--at best it will end with a polite brush-off. If you're going to call an editor to follow up, you need to have a plan. Treat your release as a jumping off point--a channel to offer to arrange an interview, send additional information, or schedule a product demo.

Securing success (i.e., placement) requires patience, persistence, and--well, to be honest--the right connections. Successful public relations does not happen overnight. It's a process of relationship building over time. Making one wrong call insufficiently armed with even the most basic information is enough to stall a relationship before it begins. Your reputation is always on the line. Editors need to know that they can depend on you to consistently deliver--whether it's a bylined article or an expert source to comment on an industry trend--on time and on target.

When it comes to results, an effective news release will...

* Establish and enhance your reputation

* Affirm your company's authority in its given industry or field

* Profile your company's brand, services and/or products among target audiences

* Create new business opportunities

* Improve staff morale

* Promote sales

Breaking News - Man vs Nature

Break, break and break.

Your culture is broken. Your routine is broken. Your whole day is broken. Your evenings are broken. Your life has become one helluva hiatus of incisive breaks.

Fortunately your office gives you only one break a day. But if you even think of enjoying your break you get mercilessly broken. If you prefer to stay at home your existence gets broken.

The news channels keep on breaking their news till nothing remains. They even break the news of a heart broken wife beaten by her booze broken husband. The entertainment channels break you tastelessly when you start finding it palatable. The movie channels break you so much that you give up going any further with it. The sports channels break even the live proceedings and allow so much break virus creep into the small screen that you almost need a google search to find your favourite players.

This burden of breaks is definitely getting oppressive and dangerous for the living planet. How so? Well, we cannot afford to take a break here. We continue relentlessly so that you get the full point without it being broken.

It is said that nature retaliates when man commits follies on earth. Nature tries to convey messages or warnings first. When these are not heeded nature starts breaking out in full fury. Enough breaks are enough follies. Nature has already demonstrated that in a myriad pattern all over the globe.

In summer coldness creeps in due to incessant rains. If you see the pattern in different parts of the globe including India you will find that 10% to 50% of total seasonal rainfall get delivered in just few hours or in a single day. After that follows a long gap and then again the deluge for one or two days. Floods, earthquakes, fires have acquired added force due to the concentrated efforts. So you sweat in winter, shiver in summer, swim in rainwater and despair of nature's unseasonal behavior. Deadly surprises lurk in every corner of your planet.

Yes, nature too has started breaking news and taking breaks. It breaks out furiously to break for a long period of rest.

Dare take a break?

Breaking News - Low Carb, Low Fat, and Low Calorie Diets Do NOT Work

Have you tried these types of diets and still have not lost weight? I have and finally have the answers. Read the Weight Loss Facts to find out why.

Why Low Carb Diets DON'T WORK

Low carb diets have recently become popular over the last couple years, but the problem with these menus is that they are too strict and TOO HARD TO FOLLOW. So, you'll probably find it extremely difficult to get slim using a Low Carb Dieting Plan. They rob your body of too much energy (from carbohydrates) and make it nearly impossible to remain on the program for very long. Do you know that you can't even eat an apple in some phases of these diets? This is why so many dieters find it difficult to follow a strict low carbohydrate menu.

Why Low Fat Foods DON'T WORK

Low fat diets can actually result in weight gain. Low fat foods have been popular for more than 15 years, but yet our society is getting more overweight as each year passes. This fact alone should tell you that eating a purely low fat menu is not the answer to losing weight.

Why Low Calorie Diets DON'T WORK

The number one reason why low-calorie diet plans don't work is: when you eat low-calorie foods, your body basically remains malnourished. You feel sick and tired at all times. Forget about exercises, you don't have enough energy to complete even your regular activities. All these things happen because your metabolic rate is low!

Now you know what doesn't work. Find out what does work by going to this link: http://www.FatLossForIdiotsNow.com

If you are a news junkie or if you simply want to have the news come to you instead of you searching for the news, consider tapping into the incredible power of the Internet. There are many different ways you can stay informed on breaking news events locally, nationally, and around the world. The following isn't a complete list, but it is a good place to start if you want to begin using the net for news.

RSS Feeds

An RSS feed is a brilliant invention that allows you to be notified every time your favorite website has new content for you to enjoy. This type of feed works best with blogs that are updated a half dozen times per day. A site like CNN, that is updated several times an hour, can drown a person in RSS notifications. To sign up for an RSS feed, enable them in your browser and then click on the orange triangle RSS logo on any website that you want to be notified about. When breaking news happens, you'll know within seconds.

Twitter

Twitter is the hottest social networking application on the Internet. It allows you to subscribe to a variety of other users, including major daily newspapers from across the globe, worldwide news outlets, and even local television stations. Most of these news outlets will send out a tweet when a major story breaks, and when something like the death of Michael Jackson happens, you'll likely hear about it from 50 sources all at once. The power of Twitter to follow breaking news is simply unparalleled, and it is now widely considered to be an invaluable news gathering tool.

News Websites

Every major news outlet from CNN to your local weekly paper has a website. Most of these websites are updated throughout the day, every day of the week, to reflect breaking news stories. Granted, some of these stories are nothing more than the latest tale of a cat stuck in a tree, but if those are the types of stories you are looking to follow, then this is the service for you. It only takes a few moments to jump from news website to news website, and you'll always be current on the latest breaking news.

Email Alerts

Almost every major news site allows users to sign up for email alerts. An email alert is sent out when a major breaking news story hits and since these emails can be forwarded to your portable device, you'll never be without your lifeline to breaking news. These services are free for now, although some news outlets have talked about charging for them in the future.

As you can see, there are many different ways in which you can use the Internet to stay current on the latest breaking news. Many of these services only take a second to sign up for and they can pay huge dividends.

Breaking News - Indian Economy to Rise Socially

The financial market of India is still grooving to the tunes of the recession leftovers. According the latest financial market news, India has seen a steep growth in the recent time defying all the turbulence caused by the economic slowdown. Touching the mark of US$ 1.04 trillion, India's market capitalization has gained the whopping ninth position in the entire world.

The overall magic has occurred due to the optimistic government reforms and continuity in policies which have given the Indian stock market a great boost. With this, the Indian economy is all set to witness a turn-around within then next six to nine months and as the breaking news indicate the financial world is abuzz with the latest in the Indian capital market reforms. This indicates that Indian companies shall see a huge rise in money nurtured from the IPOs in the fiscal year 2010. Moreover, as the economic experts indicate that the bulk liquidity that has flooded into the economic system is central banks driven and this same liquidity finds its way into the stock markets too.

India news have also enlightened the fact that the moment world economy shall be bottomed out, the entire country's economy will witness the haunting shadow of rising energy prices which according to economic experts is the greatest challenge. Besides, the country shall also be victimized with higher inflation rates. If things are looked and observed closely, then the scenario appears crystal clear; after ten years or so, food and fresh water would be the major problems demanding care and concern, lack of which shall devote to decrease in the social stability. It is up to the government to work to improve and manage the conditions accordingly and thus, avoid the mismanagement of resources in the nearing future. A keen look at the economic growth of developed European nations, US and Japan also pops up evident questions as to what exactly will drive stability in the economic growth. Vitally, a consistent economic growth goes hand in hand with the private consumption expenditure, and the two grow simultaneously; as the latter shall rise, the former would follow.
